Now Open at the Kikiwak Inn: The Northern Tipi Camping Experience

The Kikiwak Inn opened its two newest “rooms” – the Mikisew and Muskwa Tipis – a unique glamping getaway for 2-4 guests.

General Manager Gerald Lathlin and Assistant Manager Jade Richards are excited to welcome people to the Kikiwak for the Northern Tipi Camping Experience. This is a chance for guests to hear Indigenous storytelling, cook traditional meals over a campfire, and sleep in a tipi with all the comforts of a hotel room.

Inside each tipi is a fridge, table and chairs, heater and lamp. The Mikisew Tipi has a queen bed and a futon, and the Muskwa Tipi has two twin beds. Guests will also have access to a room inside the hotel with a shower and washroom. The tipis come equipped with mosquito nets over the beds and rain caps over the tipis to keep guests comfortable and dry.

Between the tipis is a fire pit that guests of the Northern Tipi Camping Experience will have exclusive access to. The Kikiwak can provide guests with food and tools to cook over the campfire, like fish, cast iron pans, and ingredients to make bannock.

Soon, Lathlin and Richards hope to offer more Indigenous tourism opportunities with local vendors.

“We’re looking into collaborating with some of the local people,” says Richards, who encourages interested community members to get in touch with her or Lathlin about tourism opportunities like fishing tours, canoeing, berry picking and dogsled rides.

Guests can book the Northern Tipi Camping Experience from now until Thanksgiving or longer, depending on the weather. Call the Kikiwak Inn at 1-888-KIKIWAK. Online booking will be available soon.
